Glenveagh School


Glenveagh School is a school for children with sever learning disabilities situated in South Belfast and controlled by the Belfast Education & Library Board. It is attended by some 150 pupils ranging from 7 to 19.

The school seeks to maximise the ability of each pupil in a secure environment which enables them to learn happily and effectively. The children and young people are taught through the subjects of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. However, to meet the individual needs of the pupils each Pupil is assesses and a programme appropriate to his or her needs and abilities is drawn up. The Curriculum is presented in small steps so that pupils will experience success and achievement and this become self motivated.

Emphasis is placed on developing independence and this is fostered through the Social and Life Skills Curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for personal requirements within the school and at home and to interact with the wider world. The years between 16 and 19 see the curriculum and knowledge which the young people have acquired.

The school regards membership of ACET as an extension of its ethos. Pupils have benefited from ACET’s Project Career which has enabled them to explore career choices and to access job sampling and work placements.
